Amethyst is a purple quartz variety that ranges from very light lavender to deep, almost black purple. The quality of an amethyst is determined by its clarity and its color, the clearer and more intense the color, the better the quality. The purple color comes from its iron content and natural underground irradiation.

Several cultures have used amethyst in their spiritual rituals: the ancient Egyptians carved amethyst into the shape of animals and used them as amulets.
